What are Post-Secondary Academies?
Post-secondary academies are afternoon programs offered by our Post-secondary partners:

  • Metro Community College
  • ITT Technical Institute

What is the Metro Community College Career Academy? 
The Metropolitan Community College Career Academy is designed to provide high school juniors and seniors with opportunities to explore various career fields. Through the Career Academy, students will benefit in many ways:

--practical skills for the specific career area
--earn college credit while in high school|
--safety procedures
--receive a 50% discount in college tuition
--job-seeking skills
--get a “head start” on a college degree
--interpersonal skills for the workplace
--gain exposure to the college environment

Why should you become involved? 
A new way of exposing students to various career areas of education is needed due to limited human, financial and physical resources in secondary education as well as an increased demand in workforce opportunities.

To meet this challenge, Metropolitan Community College (MCC) has developed the Career Academy, which combines the best of all existing systems to meet the needs of students and secondary education institutions, while assisting businesses. The MCC Career Academy increases student awareness and provides opportunities to explore career fields prior to high school graduation so that more informed career choices can be made.

Required Fees: Metro Community College gives a 50% price reduction for academy students!  Tuition for Metro Community college is $26.50 per credit hour—between 11-18 credit hours for year one depending on the program. (Rate subject to change)  Scholarships are available for students who have financial need.

Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age.  Applications are taken during early spring.  Notification of acceptance will be given prior to school ending for the year. 

Dual Enrollment: Metro Community College during the traditional academic calendar.  Programs are one or two years.

Location: Metro Community College (campus location depends on program).   Afternoon courses.

Auto Collision Technology (Applied Technology Center, 10407 State St)

Do you enjoy watching TV programs about repairing and restoring automobiles? Through this program you will receive hands-on experience in a very popular and lucrative industry.

Automotive Technology- Juniors Preferred (South Omaha Campus)

Are you currently working on your car or want more experience in automotive repair? You will learn about electrical, brake and suspension systems while earning a Specialist Diploma in this two year program.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) (South Omaha Campus)

Do you like helping people when they are sick or in need?  You will earn a state recognized certification to work in the health field.  A criminal background check will be conducted if you are accepted in this program. 

Computer Programming (South Omaha Campus) TUITION AND BOOKS PAID WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GRANT!

Organizations need technically skilled people who can communicate effectively and work as a team with non-technical people to solve organizational problems by using technology. If you are a good communicator and problem-solver who thrives on technology, then computer programming may be the field for you.

Criminal Justice (Sarpy Center)

Do you love watching crime television shows? Do you want to learn more about the corrections and legal system? In this program you’ll learn more about both. 

Diesel Technology (Applied Technology Center, 10407 State St)

Working on an actual truck you will learn the components of the diesel engine, the fundamentals of transmissions and torque converters along with an overview of diesel engines.

Digital Cinema/Filmmaking (Elkhorn Campus)

Do you want to become the next great director or producer? Get your start by learning audio, video and scriptwriting to create documentaries and a variety of moving productions.

Early Childhood Education (Fort Omaha Campus)

Do you love working with little children? Do you want to make a career out of it? This program will introduce you to cognitive development, care, and nutrition of preschool children.

Electrical Technology (South Omaha Campus)

If the dangers and benefits of electricity fascinate you - this program’s for you! You’ll be introduced to electrical theory as well as hands-on experience in installation and circuitry standards including home wiring and safety.

Emergency Management Technician (EMT) – Seniors Only (South Omaha Campus)

Want to be the first on the scene? Do you thrive in a high stress environment and want to help people? The EMT program may be for you. You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the test, administered May 2010.

Game Design – NEW!  (Fort Omaha Campus)  TUITION AND BOOKS PAID WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GRANT!

This program introduces the student with an understanding of gaming and gives practical experience in programming beginning-level applications.  The student will explore several areas of information technology that are involved in game production, and program in a variety of languages.

Medical Office Technology (Sarpy Center) TUITION AND BOOKS PAID WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GRANT!

Would you like to be part of the world of medicine but don’t want to deal with the blood and guts? Like working on computers and think information technology is cool?

Small Engines/Precision Machining (South Omaha Campus)

This program offers a 2 year program that allows students to obtain knowledge useful in machining careers at manufacturing facilities, industrial and commercial plants.  Basic fundamentals in bench layout, basic machine tool operation, metal removal process, measuring devices and CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) will be covered. Small Engine Repair includes troubleshooting and repair of small gas engines and power equipment.  Proper procedures for testing and repairing are covered.

Theatre Technology (Omaha Community Playhouse, The Rose, Fort Omaha Campuses)

Do you love the behind-the-scenes action of the theatre? Learn about the art of technical theatre in this two year program.

Web Page Development (Sarpy Center) TUITION AND BOOKS PAID WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GRANT!

Welding Technology (South Omaha Campus)

Mom told you not to play with fire, but if you like to use it to weld things together; this two year program may be for you. You’ll focus on welding techniques including gas metal arc welding and cutting while earning a Specialist Diploma.

What is the ITT Technical Institute Academy?
The ITT Technical Institute Academy offers intro courses for Computer Networking Systems, Computer Programming, Computer Electronics Engineering, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Computer Drafting & Design and Visual Communication.

Duration:  ONE semester (January to May) / 4 credits

Tuition is provided by ITT Technical Institute for 1st and 2nd quarters of one of the six programs offered: Information Technology, Drafting and Design, Electronics Technology, Criminal Justice or Nursing.
Prerequisites:
  Must have transportation to/from classes.  Students must complete an application and assessment to participate in the selection process.  Applications are taken during September-November.  Notification of acceptance will be given prior to school by December.

  ITT Technical Institute
Location:  ITT Technical Institute

Students complete first quarter (3 accelerated classes) of general ITT programs.  During the 2nd quarter, students have the opportunity to specialize in 3 additional accelerated classes in:  Information Technology, Drafting and Design, Electronics Technology, Criminal Justice or Nursing.

These classes will be held on Monday thru Thursday from 12:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.  To receive full credit, students must attend the four days per week.

NOTE: Since ITT Technical Institute is providing tuition; students need to meet college level academics and behavior.  This is an accelerated course.

The ITT Technical Institute partnership provides students with an introduction to career paths in the field of electronics, computer systems, criminal justice and nursing.
