2012 Bond Issue Passes by 60%

On Monday, July 30, 2012 the PLSD School Board voted to place a $59.6 million bond issue on the November, 2012 ballot. This bond issue plans for future growth, maintains excellence in education, improves facilities and enhances safety and security.   The projects included in the bond issue are:

New elementary school
·       Will accommodate western growth that would feed Patriot Elementary and relieves overcrowding at Portal Elementary. The current enrollment at Portal is 597 with a capacity of 450. They currently have 3 classrooms in portables. The current enrollment at Patriot is 521 and the capacity is 450. Patriot has 2 classrooms in portables.

New middle school
·      Relieves current middle schools and accommodates the future growth coming to the middle schools from the elementary schools.
·       When enrollment numbers at the middle schools reach 800 students or 400 per grade level, the current middle school philosophy including programming, scheduling and delivery of instruction becomes a concern. With no growth factored into the enrollment numbers, an enrollment of 800 at the middle school is passed in the 2015-16 school year.
·        This year's 4th grade class will be 7th grade students in 2015-16.
·        It takes 30-36 months to build a middle school. Therefore, to prevent major overcrowded conditions at the middle school, the District is being proactive and preparing for the growth it knows is coming from the elementary.
